Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger point therapy is a specialized technique used in massage therapy to relieve pain and tension caused by tight, irritable spots in muscles known as trigger points. Application of precise pressure to these points helps to alleviate pain and restore normal muscle function.
What are Trigger Points?
Trigger points are small, irritable areas within muscle tissue that can cause pain both at the site and in other areas of the body. These points, often referred to as “knots,” can develop due to muscle overuse, injury, or stress. When pressed, trigger points can produce referred pain, a phenomenon where pain is felt in a different area than where the trigger point is located.
What Causes Trigger Points?
Trigger points can affect anyone, but certain factors increase the likelihood of developing them:
- Stress and Anxiety: High levels of stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tension, contributing to the formation of trigger points.
- Posture: Prolonged periods of poor posture, such as sitting at a desk all day, can strain muscles and lead to trigger points.
- Repetitive Movements: Engaging in repetitive tasks or motions, whether in work, sports, or daily activities, can cause muscle overuse and trigger point development.
- Injury and Trauma: Acute injuries or trauma to muscles can result in trigger points as part of the healing process
